Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dental Services

A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. This includes severe toothaches, swelling, knocked-out teeth, broken or fractured teeth, significant cuts to the gums or mouth, and lost fillings or crowns causing severe pain.

If your tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown (the chewing surface), rinse it gently with milk or saline (if available, otherwise water), and try to reinsert it into its socket. If you can't reinsert it, place it in a container of milk or saline and get to our office immediately. The sooner you are seen, the higher the chance of saving the tooth.

If you break a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling. Try to find any broken pieces of the tooth and bring them with you to your emergency appointment.

We understand the urgency of dental emergencies and strive to see emergency patients as quickly as possible, often on the same day. Please call our office immediately, and our team will assess your situation and provide you with instructions on when to come in.

When you call, please try to provide us with as much detail as possible about your situation, including the nature of the problem, the location and severity of any pain, when the issue started, and any relevant medical history. This information will help us assess your emergency and provide you with the most appropriate instructions.

Many dental insurance plans offer coverage for emergency dental care. However, the extent of coverage can vary. We will do our best to help you understand your insurance benefits and file claims on your behalf. Please bring your insurance information with you to your emergency appointment.
